The perks of being a creator of a Social Media/Community-Driven Platform
We are currently living in a result-oriented and not process-oriented society. In these times, the peers’ role in an individual’s life becomes crucial. Most of the people around you are not interested in ‘what your journey is?’ or ‘What have you been in?’ They want to see your end state. This has created incompleteness and people seeking a sense of entitlements from their peers around. People are still stuck on not understanding what’s zero-sum and what is not zero-sum around us. They consider others losing as their winning in every sphere of life. When we understand this human behaviour, we should also try to understand the actual human motivation behind that behaviour. Human motivation is a going river. Now that everyone is on Instagram, everyone wants to look good; they all want fancy shoes, different clothes and anything or everything. Social media platforms use your need for likes to give you the audience and then sell ads on it.
There are two currencies that people spend/waste — Where they spend their time on & Where they spend their money on
People with these two currencies usually do two types of transactions daily
- Tedious transactions: Fuelling your cars/bikes. These activities are something where one feels reluctant
- Interesting transactions: Watching movies, buying shoes & Using social media.
People’s habit is to save their two currencies from Boring transactions and spend them on an interesting transaction. The problem lies in the details. The two available currencies, i.e. time and money, both behave differently.
Everybody has a different amount of money to spend, but everybody has the same amount of time to spend. People who don’t have money will put all their efforts into the time to get those applause/likes/engagements, and people who have money will spend that money to get the same applause — such a win-win situation for platforms and their creators. The parting message should be about the right problem solving while creating a community-driven platform. In Kunal Shah words, “The crux of creating wealth is about solving problems of people that are currently not solved well, and people have deep desire to solve that problem by paying money for it. Be interested in people & their motivations.”
